Colleen Hoover's Verity Plot Synopsis

Spoiler discussion for Verity by Colleen Hoover - Jen Ryland Reviews (2)

Grumpy writer Lowen Ashleigh is on her way to a meeting in New York City when she sees a pedestrian being hit by a truck and killed. A friendly spectator offers him a clean shirt, as his is now bloody.

Lowen, who is in debt following the recent death of her mother, is in town to talk about a job. Bestselling author Verity Crawford's publishing house needs an author to complete some of Verity's manuscripts. Interesting!

Spoiler discussion for Verity by Colleen Hoover - Jen Ryland Reviews (3)

The bystander of the accident is none other than Jeremy Crawford, Verity's husband. He confides in Lowen that Verity was in a car accident and that she was a huge fan of Lowen's work.

Lowen tells her agent (and ex) Corey that Jeremy invited her to his home in Vermont to look over Verity's papers and notes.

Corey suggests he ask Jeremy to send them to him, given the tragedy that befell those close to Jeremy. (Jeremy and Verity call themselves "chronists," that is, people who have chronic tragedies in their lives. But are they?)

One of Jeremy and Verity's twin daughters died of an allergic reaction, the other drowned in a lake, and then Verity had the accident.Bad things seem to happen to the people in Jeremy's life.

But Lowen says no, sorry. I go to her house

A nervous Lowen heads to Vermont. She is greeted by Crew, Jeremy and Verity's son. Jeremy suggests that she choose a pseudonym, Laura, and tells everyone to call her that. (Nobody does.)

Lowen meets Verity, who doesn't seem to notice anything around her, and Verity's nurses.

Spoiler discussion for Verity by Colleen Hoover - Jen Ryland Reviews (4)

Jeremy takes them to Verity's office. Searching through Verity's papers, he finds a manuscript that appears to be Verity's autobiography.Lowen reads part of Jeremy's encounter with Verity and their instant attraction.

Lowen is turned down for an apartment she wants to rent. Jeremy offers him a loan and goes shirtless. This, combined with all the sex scenes in Verity's autobiography, makes Lowen a huge attraction for him. Even when he thinks he sees Verity peeking through her bedroom window.

In Verity's autobiography, she is pregnant with twins and is conflicted, even jealous, about having to share Jeremy with them.Lowen judges it and wonders if Verity wrote it.

Lowen points out that Jeremy put a padlock on her bedroom door and remembers an injury she suffered while sleepwalking as a child. The next day, he goes shopping with Jeremy and is upset by two women who flirt with him. He is happy when Jeremy is done.

Crew, Jeremy and Verity's son, tells Lowen that he cut himself with a knife (which Verity sees), but later tells his father that he fell out of bed. The knife disappears.

Spoiler discussion for Verity by Colleen Hoover - Jen Ryland Reviews (5)

Lowen continues to read the autobiography, which recounts Verity's continued attempts to terminate the pregnancy by doing things like taking pills and throwing herself down stairs. This deepens Lowen's dislike of Verity.

(Video) HUGE BOOK HAUL!! | 20 new reads - gifts & an indie store run📚✨

Lowen is still in love with Jeremy.

Lowen wakes up in Verity's bed. Jeremy runs to her and she tells him about the sleepwalking incident that hurt her as a child. The next morning, he offers to put a lock on the outside of her door.

In Verity's autobiography, she nearly chokes on her daughter Harper, then realizes that Jeremy may have seen her on the baby monitor.

Verity writes about how Jeremy accuses her of favoring Chastin, Harper's twin sister. She tells him that the daycare thinks Harper is on the autism spectrum. Verity also lies and says that she is pregnant again.

Lowen and Jeremy finally have sex, but halfway through she sees Verity watching.

Lowen reads the part of the autobiography where Chastin dies from an allergic reaction. Verity is certain that Harper killed her sister.

Lowen yells at Verity for being a terrible mother and Verity wets her pants.

Jeremy and Lowen engage in marathon sex. In the morning, Jeremy wants to escape so the crew won't find him in Lowen's room, but they are locked inside.

Lowen reads the part of Verity's autobiography where she kills Harper by overturning a canoe and fails to rescue her. Lowen then asks Crew about the day Harper died and he says that his mother says not to talk to Lowen.

Spoiler discussion for Verity by Colleen Hoover - Jen Ryland Reviews (6)

The crew bites a knife and Jeremy has to have stitches with her.

The final chapter of Verity's autobiography has Jeremy realizing that Verity killed Harper, Verity despairs that her husband knows she is a murderer, and Verity contemplates crashing her car into a tree.

Lowen finds Verity out of bed. She yells at Jeremy that Verity is faking it and is also a murderer. She gives Jeremy the autobiography and tells him to read it.

Verity admits to Jeremy that she faked her condition.

Jeremy attacks Verity.

Lowen stops him and advises him to make Verity's death look like an accident. He has to induce vomiting and then suffocate her to make it look like she's suffocated.

wow very dark lions?

What's the end of truth for Colleen Hoover?

Seven months later, Lowen is pregnant and finishing Verity's manuscripts in New York. She, Jeremy, and the team return to the Vermont house, where Lowen finds a letter from Verity to Jeremy.

What does Verity's letter say?

In the letter, Verity tells Jeremy that his "autobiography" was actually a writing exercise, a fictionalized version of real events that he wrote to "get inside the mind of a villain".

Spoiler discussion for Verity by Colleen Hoover - Jen Ryland Reviews (7)

Verity claims she wasn't really trying to terminate the pregnancy or kill the twins.🇧🇷 It was all a "writing exercise".

But Jeremy read the autobiography and was furious when he thought Verity had killed his children, strangled them unconscious, tied them up, rammed the car, put them in the driver's seat and fled the scene.

After the accident, Verity pretended to be injured and when Jeremy was in New York to meet with the editors, she made plans to leave Jeremy and run away with the team.

Spoiler discussion for Verity by Colleen Hoover - Jen Ryland Reviews (8)

The only problem was that Verity simply couldn't remember where she had put the printout of the "Autobiography" that Lowen found so easily.

A horrified Lowen rips up Verity's letter and flushes it down the toilet. She can't blame Jeremy for being duped by the fake autobiography. Since they both killed Verity, she has to keep quiet.

What's in the new afterword for the new hardcover version of Verity?

Spoiler discussion for Verity by Colleen Hoover - Jen Ryland Reviews (9)

I was off the grid last week and then WOW I found out that Verity's new hardcover released September 27th has a new epilogue chapter.

What happens in the new chapter of Verity's epilogue?Buckle up and let's talk about MORE epilogue spoilers.

The epilogue takes place six months after the end of the main story.

Nova, Verity and Jeremy's little girl, is three months old. They live by the water in North Carolina. How cute isn't it?

Spoiler discussion for Verity by Colleen Hoover - Jen Ryland Reviews (10)

First, the epilogue does NOT tell us whether the autobiography was true or the letter. Pardon.

But we're getting A LOT more information about this sweet couple, Jeremy and Lowen.

Lowen decided that Verity was a bad mother, regardless of whether the manuscript or the letter was true. Either Verity did terrible things to her children OR she wrote about doing terrible things to them. Both are bad. It's all right, Lowen, but one is much worse.

Don't worry about all the staff manuscript/staff letter nonsense. Lowen is much more concerned about her sex life with Jeremy.

She is deeply jealous of Verity's beauty, her ability to bounce back after giving birth, and the incredible sex life she and Jeremy (supposedly) had.I think Lowen believes the manuscript was true because Verity talked about it.

To feel better, she buys new lingerie with her Verity Victoria's Secret credit card. Oh dear

Spoiler discussion for Verity by Colleen Hoover - Jen Ryland Reviews (11)

Lowen finds Jeremy in bed reading a new thriller written by a lovely raven-haired woman who looks a lot like Verity and is jealous.just jealous? Aren't you nervous because he's looking for your replacement?

Lowen initiates sex, but can't help feeling that his sex life isn't as good as Verity and Jeremy's.

Lowen and Jeremy decide to take Nova and the team to the beach. Lowen spreads out a blanket and watches the kids as Jeremy goes for a run.Much better for picking up hot new women, right?

Spoiler discussion for Verity by Colleen Hoover - Jen Ryland Reviews (12)

Lowen remembers the time when she asked Crew what to name the baby and he said he didn't care because the baby was going to die anyway.Wow. Please get this boy a therapist.

Lowen also mentions that nobody knows where they live and that they all took Lowen's last name.

Suddenly, a familiar-looking woman approaches Lowen on the beach. It's Patricia, Verity's chatty friend, who met Lowen at the supermarket in Vermont.

Patricia, who is walking her dog, is clearly surprised to see lions. Patricia does the math: the baby is three months old and Verity died about a year ago.

Jeremy comes back from his run, talks to Patricia and tells Lowen to take the kids to the car.

Jeremy quickly packed all of his belongings into the car.and then he goes back to shore and drowns Patricia.

Spoiler discussion for Verity by Colleen Hoover - Jen Ryland Reviews (13)

Rest in peace Patricia. Yes, the dog is fine. Thanks for asking 🙂

Upon arriving home, Jeremy destroys all of the evidence they saw on the beach.

A horrified Lowen briefly considers leaving, but decides he murdered Verity and Patricia to protect his family.

As a reward and sign of loyalty, she gives him a "special treat" in the shower. He seems to like his gift. He chokes her so hard she's sure he'll leave bruises. But she doesn't care. Even though Jeremy nearly choked Verity to death. After all, he treats her more like Verity!

After shower sex, Lowen checks on Nova, but they miss her. Crew says he took her outside because she was crying. Fortunately, she's fine.

Lowen cries himself to sleep. After making up her mind, she becomes part of a family of Chronicles.

oh lions I would sleep with one eye open if I were you...

Spoiler Discussion for Verity by Colleen Hoover

Is Verity a villain or is Jeremy a villain...or are they both evil?

Well, I don't think we can solve the first question. But after this new epilogue, is there still anyone on Team Poor Jeremy who has finally found happiness with a new woman?

Verity: "chronic" unlucky or psychotic?

I mean, anyway, Verity is... something. Whether she actually killed Harper and wrote the autobiography confessing to it OR if she did a "writing assignment" that included her guilt over Harper's death and then got lost and wrote a letter trying to blame herself, she explains that she's a little weird.

Lowen says Verity's characters "really suck" and Jeremy says Verity has weird religious parents.

So Verity is not your typical neighbor mom.But is she a killer? Is she madly in love?

Verity makes the strangest decisions in this book. She writes a crazy, fucked-up confession/writing exercise in which she recounts lots of sex scenes with Jeremy and then repeatedly tries to murder her children.

Make the pages fact or fiction instead of calling it a "writing exercise" or read it to Jeremy so he knows it's a BIG JOKE (if it's just an exercise) OR password protect or lock it (if it's genuine), she does the worst: she prints a hard copy and quickly loses it. And when he realizes that Lowen has found the manuscript, he doesn't sneak into his office at night and destroy it.

Though she says her top priority is getting her son and escaping Jeremy (as it should be, since he clearly tricked her AND tried to kill her), she'll stay here forever, watching Lowen with him asleep while pretending to be incapacitated. 🇧🇷 Because he's still looking for the autobiography.

Is Jeremy a villain?

He started the meeting with Lowen by lying that Verity was a fan of Lowen's work. And HE was the one who read Lowen's books, not Verity. He chose her to take Verity's place (or to torture her).

I feel like Verity was scared of him even before he tried to kill her, especially at the point where she lies and tells him she's pregnant again.

He (according to Verity) had already read the autobiography AND hadn't told Lowen about it when she told him to read it.

He definitely lied to Lowen. And probably Verity.

EDIT: Well, now that we've all read the epilogue, it's safe to say that Jeremy IS a villain.

Spoiler discussion for Verity by Colleen Hoover - Jen Ryland Reviews (15)

Or Jeremy and Verity have a complicated relationship and are not to be trusted?

Verity claims the manuscript is a writing exercise suggested by her agent, Amanda. A writing exercise where she is a monster who hates her children and kills them.

Jeremy finds.

Whether it's a confession or an autobiography, I think most husbands would react if Verity went mad with grief.

But Jeremy IMMEDIATELYhe assumes that his beloved wife and mother of his children is a crazed killer.

Verity never tries to explain why "he didn't believe her".Understood.

According to his own statements, he strangles her and then presents it as a car accident.

Is Verity telling the truth? I don't know. But I'm still suspicious of Jeremy. He lies a lot and is clearly violent.

Jeremy's first reaction is to be furious with Verity, so adamant in her belief that she murdered Harper and injured both twins before they were born, that Verity realizes all is lost and must plan her escape.(Again, while romance novel readers can accept this level of crazy love, many thriller readers are looking at the whole thing.)

So either 1) Verity attempts suicide by crashing her car into a tree OR 2) Jeremy injures Verity in the car accident because for some reason divorce or calling Child Protective Services is not an option for Verity.

after the accidentInstead of 1) clearing up the misunderstanding or 2) getting a restraining order against Jeremy, Verity pretends to be incapacitated for months (again, right???).

After this epilogue, is Lowen now a villain?

Lowen meets autobiography. Instead of saying, "Wtf, these two people are crazy; I'll stop," says Lowen, "hey, Jeremy is really hot." It's this whole 'my wife doesn't understand me, my wife is a psychopath' thing.

EDIT: Now that we have the new hardcover epilogue, Lowen has A LOT to explain.Ma'am, hurry up.

Spoiler discussion for Verity by Colleen Hoover - Jen Ryland Reviews (16)

Team writing exercise or team autobiography or something else as a team?

guerraI know you are exjust a "writing exercise" or a confession? what is the test

Unfortunately, as I mentioned earlier, theThe new afterword to the hardcover version of Verity offers no clues.

Evidence that Verity's manuscript is an autobiography:

Clearly there are elements of truth in the autobiography. Yes, Verity may have overdone things, but there are real teeth marks on the headboard, so it's real.

The fact that Verity faked her condition in order to stay and find the manuscript is convincing to me. She really wants that thing back. And yet, as I argued above, when he has the chance to leave, he doesn't.

Rufina (in the comments) claims that Harper's scar could prove the manuscript is genuine. When Lowen asks about the scar, Jeremy tells him that the doctors said it's not uncommon for a twin to have one.

Evidence that Verity's manuscript is a writing exercise:

If you really killed your son, would you have confessed in writing and then printed out the confession and lost it?

It's highly plausible that she was terribly at fault for Harper's death, and the manuscript was a way to explore those feelings of being a bad mother.

Verity says Amanda told her to do it, which is easy to prove or disprove.

And to Amanda?

My theories were scattered far and wide as I read, butHe was definitely wary of Jeremy. I also looked at Amanda out of the corner of my eye,Verity Publisher. On that initial date with Lowen, she paints her lips red at 9am. m. hoping to get Jeremy's attention.

Spoiler discussion for Verity by Colleen Hoover - Jen Ryland Reviews (17)

Also, Amanda was the one who supposedly suggested this ridiculous villain writing exercise to Verity.a) advance her career and POSSIBLY b) break up Verity and Jeremy.

He was kidding, but it would have been a nice twist if Amanda had shown up at the house and pointed out her teeth marks on the headboard to Lowen.

If I liked Verity, what else should I read?

I argue in mineReviewed by Veritywhich is essentially aGothic romance.

In the Gothic novel, the typical plot is a vulnerable, sheltered young woman living with an attractive but troubled man. He is often a widower, sometimes with children. She falls in love with him, but at the same time fears that he is hiding a terrible secret from her.

Think Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights or Rebecca - I have one.Full post about Rebecca!

Anyway, one of the central questions in Gothic Romance is: can our heroine trust the guy?

On Verity, is Jeremy a grieving father and devoted husband or a sinister figure? Will Lowen be his next victim? Well, after reading the sequel, I'm on Team Sinister.

Or, as suggested above, both are toxic and play sick games with each other. If you like this theory (or Verity), you should read it.Rock, Paper, Scissors by Alice Feeneyand then come to meDiscussion of Rock, Paper, Scissors spoilers.

Things I loved about Verity:

TRUTHshe had a great sense of humor and played with the conventions of romance and gothic fiction. It made me turn the pages.

As I read, I couldn't decide whether Verity was a killer or a victim. Was Jeremy a chronic or abusive husband? Was Lowen just a boy in love or a complete idiot?

After the hardcover epilogue chapter, Jeremy is definitely evil and Lowen has flared up.

So much acting.

Things that drove me crazy about Verity:

Instinct🇧🇷 Yes, this is one of the mainstays of Gothic fiction, in which a tragic, tortured man ties up a virginal protégée.

I was not a fan of lions🇧🇷 I felt like he was sneaking up on Jeremy from the moment they both witnessed the accidental death of a poor pedestrian and Jeremy took off his shirt to hand it to him. So when she finds out he's Verity's husband, she can't wait to go to Vermont and date him. Again, install love.

Verity's lack of clarity. Was she a liar and murderer or just a victim of Jeremy?
